Quantitative Aptitude: Important topics, Questions and Solutions

As I have discuss and have provide you with notes on topics like Profit and Loss, Ratio and Proportion and Percentage in my last article. And if you have not yet read my last article then please visit the http://banking.eckovation.com/ site and go to the notes section. Today I’m going to discuss the concept of important topic that is Simplification. So let us start.

Basic Definition:-

As we all know Simplification is the most important topic in every banking exams. Simplification is basically asked in quantitative aptitude to check whether the student is able to deal with numbers. Basically Simplification means to find out the final solution for complex calculations. Sometimes you will be provided with the calculation and one number will be missing and you have to find that number. And sometimes you will be provided with all the numbers and then you have to calculate in order to get simplified solution of the complex problem.

Concept Of Simplification:-

1. BODMAS Rule:- This rule depicts the correct sequence in which operations are to be executed so as to find out the value of a given expression. BODMAS stands for Bracket of division, multiplication, Addition and Subtraction and you must strictly follow the order.

Modulus of a Real Number:- Suppose a real number ‘a’ is given the modulus of ‘a’ is defined as

|a| = a, if a>0

|a| = -a, if a<0

Thus |6| = 6 and |-6| = -(-6) = 6

Confused? let us take some examples so you can understand them easily.

Examples:-

Ex 1- 4368 + 2158 – 596 – ? = 3421 + 1262

solution- let  4368 + 2158 – 596 – x = 3421 + 1262

x + 596 = 6526 – 4683 = 1843

x = 1843 – 596

x = 1247

Ex 2- The cost of 4 bags and 3 boxes is Rs 555 and the cost of 3 bags and 4 boxes is Rs 460. What is the cost of one bag?

Solution- Let the cost of 1 bag be  Rs x and that of 1 box be Rs y.

then 4x + 3y = 555        (i)

and 3x + 4y = 460      (ii)

Adding (i) and (ii) we get 7x + 7y = 1015 or x + y = 145

Subtracting (ii) from (i) we get x – y = 95

Adding the above two equations we get 2x = 240 or x = 120.

Hence cost of one bag = Rs 120.

Ex 3- Simplify: 99 * 48/49 * 245

Solution- Given expression = (100 – 1/49)*245

= 4899/49 * 245

= 4899 * 5 = 24495

Ex 4- A board 7 ft. 9 inches long is divided into 3 equal parts. What is the length of each part?

Solution- Length of board = 7 ft. 9 inches = (7 * 12 + 9)inches = 93 inches.

Therefore length of each part = (93/3) inches = 31 inches = 2 ft. 7 inches.

Ex 5- A man owns 2/3 of the market research bureau business and sells 3/4 of his shares for Rs 75000. What is the value of business?

Solution- Let the total value be Rs x.

Then 3/4 of 2/3 of x = 75000

that is x/2 = 75000

hence x = 15000

Therefore value of business = Rs 15000.

Questions:-
